The Historical Society was founded in1939 by a group of civic minded residents. Many of them were members of local service clubs.
Over the years an annual dinner was held with exhibits on display of Royal Oak History.
In the early 90's a group of the Society's members thought we needed to do more to preserve our history, they began conversations with the School District and the City.
In March of 2004 the School District generously gave the Society a room in the Churchill Community Center in exchange for being the guardians of the schools history. In 2007 an agreement was reached between the Historical Society and the City of Royal Oak to permanently occupy the fire station on Webster at Crooks Rd.

In 2004 the Society purchased a few thousand items from Bill Rassmusen, a former Royal Oak police officer who owned an historical shop in Royal Oak. He has since retired and moved to Holly. These items make up the bulk of our collections.
With volunteers helping we have cataloged over 2200 items, scanned 100's of pictures from the Tribune as well as those that are brought to us by residents.
I frequently tell visitors that every day that I'm at the Museum is like Christmas....someone is always bringing me presents.
